This dataset contains information on the functional traits and distribution of Nigerian bird species across protected area pentads (PAPs) and unprotected pentads (UPPs). The dataset includes species' taxonomic details, IUCN Red List status, ecological roles, dietary guilds, and habitat specialization. It also provides species reporting rate (RR) data in both PAPs and UPPs, along with their overall range size. Range indicates the number of pentads a species was recorded in, and reporting rate (RR) represents the percentage of times a species was recorded within its range. The maximum range is 146 pentads.

Columns:

  • Spp – Unique species identifier.
  • scientificName – Scientific name of the bird species.
  • commonName – Common name of the bird species.
  • Family – Taxonomic family.
  • RedListCategory – IUCN Red List status (e.g., LC – Least Concern; DD – Data Deficient, NT – Near Threatened, VU – Vulnerable, EN – Endangered, CR – Critically Endangered).
  • Vertebrate_prey – Binary indicator (1 = Yes, 0 = No) for vertebrate predation.
  • Scavenger – Binary indicator for scavenging behavior.
  • Herbivore – Binary indicator for herbivorous diet.
  • Insectivores – Binary indicator for insectivorous diet.
  • Frugivore – Binary indicator for frugivorous diet.
  • Granivore – Binary indicator for granivorous diet.
  • Ecosystem_Engineer – Binary indicator for species acting as ecosystem engineers.
  • Pollinator – Binary indicator for pollination role.
  • Piscivore – Binary indicator for piscivorous diet.
  • Aquatic_diet – Binary indicator for aquatic prey consumption.
  • Habitat_specialist – Binary indicator for habitat specialization.
  • mass – Average body mass (grams).
  • PAPs – Presence in protected pentads (Yes/No).
  • UPP – Presence in unprotected pentads (Yes/No).
  • Both – Presence in both protected and unprotected pentads (Yes/No).
  • RR_PAPs – Reporting rate in protected pentads (%).
  • RR_UPPs – Reporting rate in unprotected Reporting rate(%).
  • Range – Total range size (unitless).

Usage Notes:
This dataset is useful for studying bird functional diversity, species distributions, and conservation prioritization in Africa. It can support analyses on species persistence in protected versus unprotected landscapes and the role of functional traits in species distribution.
