Extended Materials 1 for Protocol_List of Shawi foods
This is a list of Shawi foods collected during a previous study in 2015 in the Balsapuerto district, Loreto, Peru as part of the PhD thesis of Dr. Carol Zavaleta-Cortijo in close collaboration with Shawi Indigenous people specially health technician Guillermo Lancha Rucoba, research assitant Desiderio Tangoa-Huansi and nutritionist Rosa Silvera-Ccallo. The list has a total of 149 types of food named by participants during an exploratory study following ten households over a 12-month period. Foods are clasify as Edible animal specie (EAS) or Edible plant specie (EPS). We have used also the House Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) (1) to create food groups. The vegetable food group is a combination of vitamin A rich vegetables and tubers, dark green leafy vegetables and other vegetables. The fruit group is a combination of vitamin A rich fruits and other fruits. The meat group is a combination of organ meat and flesh meat. The name of the species were obtained from The Shawi food book (2)
