This dataset contains the data underlying the analysis and results in the article 'Determinants of soil field-saturated hydraulic conductivity across sub-Saharan Africa: texture and beyond'.

The data were collected within different projects (see funding section) using the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF) methodology developed by ICRAF (http://landscapeportal.org/blog/2015/03/25/the-land-degradation-surveillance-framework-ldsf/; https://www.cifor-icraf.org/knowledge/publication/25533). This dataset contains data from 3573 plots from 83 LDSF sites distributed across 19 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including data on soil infiltration, vegetation structure, woody and herbaceous vegetation cover, presence of visible signs of erosion, and impact of grazing. It also contains the predictions using MIR Spectroscopy for topsoil (0-20cm) samples for soil texture (sand and clay content), soil organic carbon (SOC), and pH.

Funding

The data included in this dataset was collected with the financial support from various donors, including: the European Union Directorate General for International Partnerships through the Regreening Africa Programme (grant no. DCI-ENV/2017/387-627); The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Africa Soil Information Service (AfSIS) project, phase one (grant no. 51353); The Kenya Cereal Enhancement Programme - Climate Resilient Agricultural Livelihoods (KCEP-CRAL) supported by the Government of Kenya and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD); the Adaptation for Smallholder Agriculture Program (grant no. 2000000927) supported by the Government of the Republic of Chad; the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) (grant no. 2000000925); the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through the project Beyond the Static (grant no. 2000001302); the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the European Commission through the project on Restoration of degraded lands for food security and poverty reduction in East Africa and the Sahel: taking successes to scale (grant no’s 2000000520 and 2000000976); The Nature Conservancy (TNC); the Northern Rangeland Trust (NRT); Mpala Research Center (MRC); and the CGIAR Research Programmes (CRPs) on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA) and Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE).
