DEI statement extracts from Canadian universities.docx
1. Description of the Data
This data set consists of full-text DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) or EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) statements issued by a selected range of Canadian universities. These texts were used as the primary data source for a critical discourse analysis (CDA) study focused on tokenism, symbolic inclusion, and rhetorical strategies of exceptionalism in institutional discourse.
All statements are:
- Public-facing, accessible from institutional websites
- Dated between 2017 and 2024, depending on publication
- Either web pages or PDF documents authored by university administrators, EDI offices, or equity councils.
2. Purpose of the Data
The documents were used to identify discursive patterns relating to symbolic equity practices. Extracts from these texts were analyzed interpretively to examine how institutional language performs equity rather than enacts structural change. Only the selected excerpts were used in the paper; this file provides the URLs to the entire source documents for transparency and reproducibility.
