Autism Awareness and Demographic Determinants: Parental Perspectives from Turkey
This study aims to examine the level of autism awareness among parents in Turkey and the demographic factors influencing this awareness. Using a mixed-methods research design, quantitative data were collected through the Autism Awareness Scale and a demographic information form, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with parents. A total of 310 parents participated in the study. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS, while qualitative data were evaluated through thematic analysis. Findings indicate that although parents have a high level of general knowledge about autism, their awareness levels remain moderate. Additionally, education level, socioeconomic status, and interaction with individuals with autism significantly influence awareness levels. Qualitative findings reveal parents' experiences with autism, their sources of information, and their perspectives on societal awareness. The study provides significant insights for the development of educational policies aimed at increasing autism awareness.
