This dataset includes a master list of anthropology-related journals sourced from American Anthropological Association, the World Council of Anthropological Associations (WCAA), Journal Citation Reports (JCR), Scimago Scientific Journal Rankings (SJR), and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and were evaluated based on open access publishing options presented on the publisher websites. The journals are coded as follows: 0) non-transparent publishing options; 1) subscription only; 2) open access option; 3) completely open access with an article processing charge (APC); 4) delayed open access (free to read and publish with embargoes); and 5) fully open access (free to read and publish without embargoes). Other data points include the Article Processing Charge (APC) amount to publish open access, as well as the journal impact factor and SCimago impact factor for each journal at the time of coding (2015).

We hope that this information and openness matrix will help facilitate selection of open access publishing avenues for anthropology researchers, as well as provide a tool for librarians and information professionals consulting with anthropology scholars interested in open scholarship.
