The causal variable of interest for this example is aircraft accidents.

The response of interest is passenger deaths (including crew)

Accidents are defined by the Bureau of Aviation Accidents Archive (baaa.com) as, “Any event where an aircraft suffered such damage from a crash or hard landing that it is not in a position to be used anymore and that it is removed from service”.
