This survey collects information on levels of cultural participation and other metrics and instruments that may have a direct or indirect impact on, or may be a desired or unintended consequence of, cultural participation. The survey was designed and conducted in Australia in July 2024 using Qualtrics. Participant management, including recruitment and initial screening, was carried out through Prolific.
The survey covers a wide range of topics, including general demographic and economic questions, as well as items on attendance at cultural events or venues (active cultural participation) and on consumption of culture at home or in private spaces (passive cultural participation). This information was asked following the model of the National Arts Participation Survey (Australia). In addition, aspects related to cultural creation and barriers and enablers of cultural participation were also addressed, and questions aimed at eliciting cultural capital were included. Instruments were also included to assess participants' personality, curiosity, values and subjective well-being.
The survey consisted of 12 sections and was about 18 minutes in length according to an automatic estimate made by Qualtrics. Responses were received from 584 people, of which 26 were excluded for duplication of information or for failing the attention check questions, resulting in a final sample of 558 participants drawn from the Australian population.
