Enhancing Cyber Security Education for Engineering Adult Learners Through Virtual Labs

This paper presents the implementation of an online cyber security penetration testing laboratory aimed at enhancing the engineering student learning outcome on Modern Tool Usage for the module on Smart Grids and Cyber Security at Singapore Institute of Technology. The module is conducted in the evening hours and attended by adult learners with electrical engineering background. The virtual lab environment, leveraging resources from Pentester Academy, provides comprehensive hands-on exercises in cyber security penetration testing, covering topics such as IoT device security, SCADA network vulnerabilities, and more. The effectiveness of the virtual lab to address the learning needs of engineering students with non-IT backgrounds and to provide a scalable and cost-effective alternative to traditional in-person lab were evaluated. Preliminary results indicate significant improvements in student engagement and understanding of cyber security principles for these students.
