No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.
With lower cost data storage media video-based electronic monitoring (EM) has become practical for fisheries applications. EM systems consist of a tamper-resistant control box with on-board data storage, one or more CCTV cameras, a GPS receiver, and hydraulic and winch sensors. EM systems automously operate while the vessel is at sea, and provide independent information for activities such as fishing time and location, gear deployment and retrieval methods, catch estimation, and bycatch mitigation practices. The use of this technology is described for two British Columbia, Canada fisheries.
