Outsiders in Sport
Girls, women and gender diverse people continue to lag behind when it comes to sport participation at all ages. This is especially true for those with a disability, or from CALD or low socioeconomic backgrounds. This poetry collection responds creatively to the question of disengagement in sport, through presenting poetry created by diverse women and non-binary people who were disengaged from sport.
Produced by Everybody NOW the poems in this book were developed through workshops held on Griffith University campus with a professional poet facilitator and musician. Documentation of the day is included in the images above.
This creative research output is an edited collection of poems. The book is edited by Dr Adele Pavlidis and Prof Simone Fullagar, and features poems by Adele Pavlidis, Simone Fullagar, Millie Kennelly, Ali Chauvenet, AJ, Erin Nichols, Jasper Saint-Claire, Noeleen Ginnanne, Sam Lily, Stephanie Green, Jacki Marie and Tayna Cowan.

Research Statement
Background: The project “Outsiders in Sport“ combines sociology, feminist theory, sport studies and affect to create a statement about the importance of rethinking the ways disengagement in sport is understood, especially for those labelled as 'Other'. Contribution: The project “Outsiders in Sport“ works up against the binary between sport and creativity, producing new knowledge and affective renderings of women and non-binary people's experiences of not-belonging. The nexus between sport and creativity is a productive site for the production of new and innovative knowledge. This poetry book presents new, original works at this nexus. The work traverses multiple issues, including child abuse, body dysmorphia, failure, exclusion, and discrimination in creative ways that shifts blame for sport disengagement away from women's bodies, and onto those sporting bodies that are responsible. Significance: It’s hard to communicate the affective and emotive experiences of people who are marginalised in sport. To articulate why someone who has so much to gain from sport might stay away. With Australia set to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032 we need new ways to communicate the needs and desires of those traditionally thought of as ‘outsiders’ in sport. If these upcoming mega-sport events are to have lasting legacies for people in and around Brisbane Queensland, the voices of people in these communities needs to be central. But first we need to hear these voices, as they are, not as we want them to be. Creative methods are vital to tackling the biases and bluntness of traditional ways of collecting data in sport and policy contexts. The reach of this book of poems is much greater than any article or conference paper and is significant in demonstrating the power of creative methods in the sport area.Publisher
