Nineteenth-Century Religion, Literature and Society, vol. 1: Traditions
'Traditions' is volume 1 of a 4-volume collection of edited primary sources on nineteenth-century religion. 'Traditions' presents and contextualises sources exemplifying major traditions, denominations and movements. Emphasis is placed on representing religion as experienced 'from below', by a diverse range of voices including little known writers, as well as little known writings by more recognised figures. Christianity is presented in its established and dissenting forms, and with respect to national variations within Britain. Hinduism, Islam and Zoroastrianism are included as integral to the nineteenth-century British religious scene. The volume also features movements based on categories of social experience such as gender and class, and others led by aesthetic concerns such as poetry.
