This paper presents a new technique for constructing an electromechanical equivalent of large-scale power systems for use in transient stability studies. A large-scale power system is divided into a study system, an external system, and a remote system. Moreover the external system is subdivided into a set of coherency-based external areas (EA). The power system equivalent model can represent effectively the dynamic and steady state states of the original power system. The proposed reduction technique is applied to 77-bus, 19-generator system and transient stability evaluation using the proposed technique show excellent agreement between the responses of the actual system and its equivalent.
