Pressure is mounting to produce effective evidence-based theory, policy and practice to optimise the health of the increasing ageing population. This research investigated the relationship between mental and physical health over time in older people. This involved a review of existing research, and analyses of a large dataset. The results indicated that mental health strongly influences physical health. There are also lifestyle behaviours that can be modified to improve health. Policy and service provision must be tailored to enhance mental health across the life-span. Mental health is a critical resource in an evidence and strength-based approach to the promotion of successful ageing.
