A time lapse of maize root growth over 14 days. The maize seed was placed onto a thick layer of paper, itself contained in a transparent plastic pouch. The bottom of the pouch was cut to allow water to evacuate. The pouch was placed in a flatbed scanner held vertically. Pictures were taken every 30 min over 14 days. The plant was watered with water from the top daily.

Embryonic roots (primary and seminal) are first to emerge. The crown roots, emerging from the shoots, emerge slightly later on.
