Three-dimensional representation of the typical structure of a porous ice-templated material. The image was obtained by X-ray computed tomography. The pores are aligned along the freezing direction (direction of the temperature gradient, vertical in this case). Dendritic surface features that originate from the dendritic growth of the ice crystals cover the walls. The typical wall thickness is in the 10-50 microns range.
