How often have we read a story in a newspaper, and despaired over a lack of data to back it up? Or rolled our collective eyes at a friend who begins their argument with "Well I'm no expert but..."? The availability and accessibility of data, software and other research outputs is fundamental to good research, yet many barriers still exist. And whilst open data is moving us forward, we risk being stalled by our software. This keynote talk for the Digging Into Data Conference on 27th January 2016 calls out these issues and silos, and examines how we have to change our attitudes to "shame" if research is to survive public criticism.
