The modern well-founded laboratory: how has software changed the practice of research?
"Celebrating Science" Lecture at the National Physical Laboratory.
In this talk, I will discuss the Software Sustainability Institute’s work in understanding the role of software in contemporary research, the research infrastructure that is required to support modern research, and the practices that can be used to improve the quality and efficiency of research that makes use of specialist software in areas such as modelling and simulation, data capture and analysis, and experimental control. I will also describe some of the universal challenges facing us all, including the “reproducibility crisis”, software credit and careers, and software sustainability.
