The Voluntary Associations of Wellington 1840-1850

This paper focuses on the establishment of voluntary associations during the first 10 years of planned European settlement of Wellington in Aotearoa/New Zealand. It identifies and discusses 70 voluntary associations and their organizers. It argues their fluctuating fortunes paralleled those of the colonial settlement.
