As a high-speed train passes a platform, commuters can be knocked off their feet. This effect is known as slipstream. The research undertaken during this PhD program employed state-of-the-art computer modelling to better understand this phenomenon. The contributions of different train features and track geometry have been quantified. The modelling approach and knowledge gained can feed into improved train design and be incorporated into regulations to protect passengers and track-side workers, as high-speed trains become a more common transportation option in the future.
