Test cases for vertical staggerings

Prognostic variables can be positioned at different places on a computational grid leading to staggered or unstaggered grids. The Charney--Phillips vertical staggering has the correct degrees of freedom so as to avoid the computational mode that is associated with the Lorenz vertical staggering.<div><br></div><div>We present a 2D vertical slice test case based on the test case by <a>Arakawa & Konor 1996</a> that excited the Lorenz computational mode. We also experiment with the <a>Schär mountain waves test case</a> to excite the computational mode over orography.</div>
