Abstract The use of alternative materials in the production of concrete can be one of the viable solutions for sustainability in the construction industry. It is therefore necessary to study the mechanical properties of the new concrete mixture, produced with those materials. This study evaluates the bond strength between steel bars and concretes produced with aggregates from red ceramic waste, aiming to use this alternative mixture in the production of reinforced concrete structural elements. For this purpose, four concrete mixtures were produced; one reference, without any replacement, and three other mixtures with gradual replacement of the coarse aggregate by a red ceramic waste aggregate (20%, 40% and 100% replacement, by volume). Twelve beams, three for each studied concrete mixture, were made and evaluated in the laboratory according to the testing method recommended by RILEM-CEB-FIP (1983). The results obtained, regarding the bond strength between steel bar and concrete, indicated the viability of using red ceramic waste as a replacement for part of the coarse aggregate in the production of concrete for structural purposes.
