Schematic representation of the principles of frost heave
Schematic representation of the principles of frost heave. The water is drawn from an unfrozen reservoir below the frozen soil, and aggregates into a growing ice lens. The uplift of the soil is thus related to the crystals, and not to the volume increase resulting from the water-to-ice transformation.
