This paper argues for a metacompatibilist approach to the free will problem. Adopting this view may resolve the cognitive dissonance some people may have because they hold seemingly contradictory intuitions about compatibilism (such as the usefulness of blame and punishment) as well as incompatibilism (that people often blame or praise others for things that are determined by factors, such as socioeconomic background, that are outside of their control).
