This collection was Taken during February/March 1970 at the time of the great Hindu festival of Shivaratri in honour of the deity Shiva, the creator and destroyer of the Universe. At that festival sadhus or itinerant yogis gather in great numbers at the most holy Hindu temple in Nepal, Pashupatinath, near Kathmandu, which may be translated as 'Lord of All Creatures' - an epithet of Shiva. Countless pilgrims attend the temple, as well as the sadhus who earn their keep by their holiness as well as with fairground tricks, some of which may be seen in the photographs. Entry to non-Hindus is always strictly forbidden so all these were taken on the hill overlooking the temple or just outside the holiest precinct itself.
