Acknowledging research contributions like data and software is a responsibility for multiple stakeholders. It is also an opportunity to seed these nascent workflows with positive, FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable) practices. One example would be not merely providing a citation for a data contribution, but also connecting the contribution with related contributors, objects, and institutions through persistent identifiers (PIDs). PIDs like DOIs (for things) and ORCID iDs (for people) are crucial research infrastructure that helps to enable each of the FAIR principles and can facilitate acknowledgement of data contributions by providing transparent, authoritative, and provenanced connections between researchers and all of their many contribution types.
