The new locality of Schistostega pennata was found in 2012 on sandstones near Różana in the Kamienne Mts. The species had not been reported there before. The new locality fits in the general trend of the range expansion and population increase. The trend has been accelerating since the 1970s. The analysis of ecological requirements of the species reveals that it depends not only on the specific habitat type (rock crevices, entrances to caves and tunnels), but also on the oligotrophic soil. Its expansion, observed since the 1950s, may depend on the gradually increasing acidification of soil and rock surface due to the anthropogenic emission of
compounds that led to decrease of rainwater pH – SO2 formerly and NOx recently. Schistostega
pennata can thus be regarded as an indicator of decreasing quality of natural environment.
