The culture of overflow in the times of underflow

One of the problems of modern culture is overflow which is the effect of
technological transformations. We can observe the dramatic change in the
information environment. Social abstract systems are becoming more and
more complex and simultaneously people’s cognitive skills are deteriorating.
The text concentrates around the critical analysis of the overflow
theory, especially in the sphere of culture and information as well as on
a description of psychosocial consequences of the overflow. The overflow
exhausts and makes life difficult, it complicates identity choices and
causes lack of sense of control. Different filters and heuristics appear in
the face of these and other consequences and are used by people to get
control over the overflow. The article focuses many tools of this sort which
are put together in five categories: 1. Heuristics of confiding/ surrender,
2. Heuristics of “fast and thrifty”, 3. Tools such as “ axing choices”, 4.
Solutions such as “everything at once” and 5. Conscious attempts to take
control over the information environment
