Journals publishing Wellcome Trust Funded Outputs

A study of the journals publishing Wellcome Trust funded output using data from PubMed. A search of PubMed was run for the term Wellcome in the grant number field. This yielded several tens of thousands of results which were downloaded as and XML file (provided, wellcome.xml).

The XML file was parsed for articles and a database created (wellcome.sql) of articles, and the journals they were published in. The database was then queried for the counts of specific journals by year in this corpus. The results were saved as csv (wellcome.csv) and the top 35 journals in 2012 were graphed (Wellcome.png).

Limitations: The data are dependent on PubMed registration of funder information and it is known that authors are poor at providing this information. However as Wellcome pay directly for any charges made for making articles accessible it is likely that Wellcome do have better compliance that most funders.

No check has been made for journals that changed name over this period, the construction of the database assumed consistency of name throughout the PubMed set.

The data are restricted to those journals registered in PubMed. Some proportion of Wellcome outputs is in journals that are not indexed in PubMed. I have not sought to cross reference with PMC. The data are broadly consistent with analyses done by others that I have seen based on Scopus data.

PubMed only holds funder data for those organisations that are PubMed partners. Wellcome joined sometime around 2006/7 so data from around this time and earlier are poor. The Wellcome Trust open access policy dates from around the same time.
