Elemental phosphorus (red or white) reacts with alkyl and aryl vinyl sulfides in the superbase system KOH/DMSO(H2O) at 75–120°C for 2–3 h to afford 2-alkyl(aryl)thioethylphosphinic acids in a yield of up to 31%.

The work was supported by the President of the Russian Federation (program for the support of leading scientific schools, grant NSh-7145.2016.3) and the spectral data were obtained using the instrument park of Baikal Analytical Center.
