Because authorities did not believe Ancient Greeks could have made a sophisticated geared device that could calculate celestial movements, the Antikythera Mechanism, found in a sunken Roman shipwreck, was ignored for 50 years. The preconceptions of experts prevented a true understanding of this device. It was just by chance that the perseverance of another expert finally led to the discovery of its true purpose.
