Image shows the strategy used by the GIMIC simulations (Crain et al., 2009), whereby five environmentally-diverse regions of the Millennium Simulation were resimulated at high resolution and including gas physics. This enables the formation of galaxies to be studied, across the range of environments expected to be found in a cosmic volume comparable to that probed by low-redshift galaxy surveys.
