Formation of the Taylor column from a localized radial force

This movie shows the cylindrical radial velocity (away from the rotation axis, which is the vertical axis on the left hand side of the figure)

In a spherical shell filled with fluid, a localized body force (gaussian profile) is applied where the column starts. It appears that the fluid is entrained on a whole column instead of a point, because of the action of the Coriolis force which tend to make the flow invariant along the rotation axis.

This is known in rotating fluid mechanics as the formation of the Taylor column.
