The donor molecule is excited to a higher energy state by an adsorbed photon. The donor relaxes back to its ground state either by emitting a photon or transferring energy to the acceptor molecule. The excited state of the acceptor molecule relaxes by emitting photons. Shown are the two widely used donor-acceptor dyes Cy3 and Cy5.
