Despite high health burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in Mongolia, little is known about the financial implications of NCDs for the health sector and household economic wellbeing. The study found that NCDs place a significant economic burden on health systems in Mongolia. Public spending on NCDs is low. Healthcare payments by households with members affected by chronic diseases increases their likelihood of becoming impoverished. The primary healthcare services are inadequate and lack critical inputs to provide needed NCD prevention and control services. This jeopardizes the sustainability of health system response to tackle the high burden of NCDs faced by Mongolia.
