This research has investigated the developments in Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) and its introduction and impact within civil engineering education. The philosophy of Computer Assisted Learning in Higher Education and developments in software specifically for this field are reviewed. This provides the background to a critical evaluation of existing CAL software and philosophies related to Civil Engineering and, more specifically Structural Engineering. The development and evaluation of prototype/sample CAL software to help in the teaching of Structural Analysis and Design to BTEC and degree students is then described. [Continues.]
