Ceratopsid Dinosaur, Color Surface Mesh of Scapula

Download (0 kB)

Description: This dataset includes a 3D surface mesh (with color) for the left scapula of RAM 6264, a ceratopsid dinosaur.

Taxon: Chasmosaurinae indet. (Ceratopsidae: Ornithischia: Dinosauria), potentially Triceratops sp.

Specimen: RAM 6264, Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, Claremont, California, USA. This catalog number comprises the scapula and associated surface float.

Locality and Horizon: Locality RAM V97047, McCone County, Montana, USA; Hell Creek Formation (late Maastrichtian, Cretaceous). Detailed locality data are on file at the RAM and are available to qualified investigators upon request.

File Information: The original point cloud was reconstructed using photogrammetry, on April 29, 2013. Photos at 4288x2848 pixel resolution were acquired with a Nikon D90 digital camera, and were resized to 1200x797 pixels. Data were processed using BundlerTools, which in turn uses Bundler 0.4, CMVS, and PMVS2. Two batches of images were processed (one of 33 photos and another of 25 photos). The resulting raw point clouds were merged in MeshLab 1.3.0, extraneous points were deleted, and the point cloud was downsampled for meshing. A surface mesh was produced using a Poisson surface reconstruction algorithm (Octree Depth=10, Solver Divide=9, 1 sample per node, Surface Offsetting=1). The mesh was scaled by comparison with measurements of the original specimen (1 unit on the model equals 1 mm), and data were exported in PLY file format. The resulting file, which includes color information, is 11.7 Mb in size.
