COV-OBS (1840-2010): pseudo-streamfunction; northern hemisphere

Isocontours of the pseudo-streamfunction (divided by the core radius), ξ/Rc, using an orthographic projection as seen from the Nort pole. Contour increments are in units of km/yr. The Earth's core liquid iron circulates anti-clockwise around centers of positive ξ (red) and clockwise around centers of negative ξ (blue). The root mean square (rms) velocity for the surface mean flow is 10km/yr.

The represented flows are reconstructed from the mean over the whole time interval and the first three main variability modes.
