CLSM media file showing the epidermis with trichogen cells of a pink eyed bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) pupa.
The cuticle is not yet deposited but the branches of the developing hairs are already visible in the pink eyed bumble bee pupa. Trichogen cells of longer (trichogen long) and shorter (trichogen short) setae are embedded between honeycomb shaped non-setal epidermal cells. Spatial constraints might lead to the development of the "setal pit" surrounding the base of the setae as normal epidermal cells are not able to deposit cuticle on regions surrounding the cuticle.
