Several ancient sites across the islands that constitute modern Mumbai and its suburbs seem to be home to relics of a rich past; from Parēl Heptad to Ghārāpurī Caves, North Konkan is strewn with Jaina, Buddhist and Śiva related archaeological remains. Parēl Heptad is an 11.5 ft by 6.5 ft, apparently uncompleted, marble sculpture, which was found during the construction of a road between Parel and Sewree. It seems to be portraying Śiva with seven heads and some other figures below; dated at around 6th century CE. Ghārāpurī Caves, more popularly known as Elephanta Caves, is a group of caves and Buddhist stupa mounds; the caves are dated between 5th and 7th centuries CE.
