Understanding the nature and evolution of very old stars provides a glimpse into the early formation of our Galaxy. By determining the chemical compositions of several samples of long-lived, low-mass stars, we have identified specific populations of stars that appear to be avoiding the final phase of stellar evolution, in conflict with established stellar theory.
