This thesis used advances in online and mobile technology to address the limitations in existing clinical data collection approaches for studying chronic pain. The thesis used a participatory design science research methodology and proposed a novel higher frequency data collection approach. This approach incorporates the patient's context in addition to self reported pain data. The findings have contributed towards a better understanding of chronic pain, which could have an impact on the accuracy of current data collection approaches, and can lead to better treatment for chronic pain.
