K, P Whisker Use and its Role in Object Localization
Vibrissal touch is an active sense - whisker movements are continuously tuned to sensory events and task demands. Here, we examine the adaptive aspects of whisking behavior across a range of sensory and task conditions. Whisking is constrained by a dependency between motion parameters, as well as by sensory events and task requirements. Principally, we find that these constraints act differently on whisking amplitude and frequency, supported by a recent finding that these kinematic parameters appear to be controlled by different neural systems.
behavior;vibrissa;whiskers;active sensing;object localization;Behavioral Neuroscience 2012-11-08
