The University of Cape Town's institutional Research Data Management Policy, passed in March 2018, mandates that postgraduate students and researchers must complete Data Management Plans (DMPs) in which they describe their plans for gathering, storing, archiving and where appropriate publishing their research data. This policy impacts upon academic and student support staff across the institution, including faculty research committees, the Research Office, liaison librarians, data managers, and other staff who help students and staff negotiate the administrative aspects of conducting research.

This presentation at the Research Office provides an overview on the following topics related to supporting research data management in an Open Science context:
1. What constitutes research data
2. The changing research data lifecycle in an Open Science environment
3. The FAIR & 5-star open data principles
4. Administering open data requests
5. Data availability statements
6. Storing, backups and digital preservation
7. The tools, services and support provided by the Digital Library Services unit
8. Addressing common researcher concerns around data management planning and open data publishing.

DLS provides research data management support through presentations, online resources, workshops and small group consultation sessions. UCT students and researchers looking for RDM support can contact DLS at dls@uct.ac.za.
