A range of data shows a significant increase in the amount of mental health issues faced by young people in Western populations today. In response to this increase, this research explored the influence adherence to value systems prevalent in Western contexts may be having on these statistics. Specifically, it investigated the role extrinsic and individualistic value systems have on the wellbeing of Western youth, as well as possible intervention strategies aimed at decreasing attachment to these values and in turn increase wellbeing. Findings show that cultural influences play an essential and understated role in the increasing depressions statistics experienced by young people today.
