This research is the first attempt at filling an important knowledge gap by studying and analysing the notion of impoliteness in Persian from Cultural Linguistics and linguistic pragmatics perspectives. Drawing on naturally occurring data, this study analyses the underlying cultural conceptualisations and moral values that are used in (im)politeness evaluations. The study also reveals that taking offence is caused by the infringement of various idiosyncratic, social and cultural expectations that are not equally shared by members of the speech community in question.
