Paciaroni, Megan Chen, Yi Lynch, Kyle Guildenbecher, Daniel Visualization.mp4 This visualization illustrates backscatter Particle Image Velocimetry via Optical Time-of-flight Sectioning (PIVOTS). The setup shows a small pulse of water being injected into a test cell to form a vortex ring. Both the jet and test cell are seeded with neutrally buoyant particles. The first example illustrates the result with no optical sectioning, showing mostly light scattering in the cell. The second example with optical sectioning shows the particles in the center of the nozzle traveling to form a pair of vorticies with no scattering. The last section shows how PIV algorithms can be used to calculate velocity and vorticity in the flow. Velocimetry;Kerr effect;Backscattering;Flow diagnostics 2018-01-10
