HUNTER, NICHOLAS JAMES RICHARD The anatomy of a ‘hot-on-cold’ shear zone: insights from quartzites of the Main Central Thrust, Alaknanda Valley (Garhwal Himalaya) This thesis explored how deformation is recorded at the microscopic and crystal scale inside deformed quartz-rich rocks of the Himalayas. Distinct structures were observed across weak and strongly deformed rocks, and across hot rocks and cold rocks, which gives insights into how the crust accommodates deformation during mountain building events such as in the Himalayas. strain;shear zones;quartz;microstructures;Rheology;Structural Geology;Geology 2017-08-15
