Birrell, Bob Sheridan, John Rapson, Virginia Why no action on engineering training? Severe shortages of professional engineers are now evident in Australia. Yet the Australian Government has shown no interest in expanding domestic training levels. The reasons for this inaction include a lack of awareness that there has been no increase in the training of domestic engineering students since the Coalition came to power in 1996 and unrealistic expectations that migrant engineers can fill the gap.
