A one-dimensional Zn(II) radical anion coordination polymer, [ZnCl(obip•)]<i>n</i> (Hobip = 2,3′-biimidazo[1,2-<i>a</i>]pyridin-2′(3′<i>H</i>)-one) (<b>1</b>) was synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction between Zn(ClO4)2·6H2O and hydrochloride salt of imidazo[1,2-<i>a</i>]pyridin-2(3<i>H</i>)-one, in which the radical anion ligand ([obip]•−) was generated in situ by aldol condensation and then deprotonation. The compound <b>1</b> presents strong antiferromagnetic coupling between paramagnetic radical species and notable greenish yellow-red fluorescence emission.
